Leverage a Hammer and Screw to Twist Out Wood Warping

Twisted and warped wood can be a pain to untwist and seat correctly in place. Use a partially driven screw along with your hammer to help pull the twist out of any joist, stud or truss.

Lip Balm Emergency Cash Supply

chapstick-cash

Headed to the beach and don’t want your cash stolen? Grab an old Chap Stick or other lip balm container and remove what’s left inside (including the inside portion of the twist up mechanism). Take all the cash you’ll need for frozen, chocolate-covered bananas, roll into a cylinder with a diameter smaller than the tube and stash that cash! Depending on your currency of choice and the brand of lip balm, you may need to fold the cash lengthwise before rolling to get the right fit (just make sure you leave enough cash sticking up above the top of the tube that you can still grab the bills easily). Don’t forget about your stash and try to use it on your lips though, cash residue has a low SPF!

Vacation Plant Watering with Wine Bottles

wine-bottle-waterer

Don’t have a house-sitter to take care of all your house plants and container plants outside? Don’t panic! Grab a wine bottle (if it’s not empty, drink that wine up!), rinse it clean, and fill it with water. If you’re feeling extra motivated, you can even mix in a little plant fertilizer. Then quickly flip the bottle upside down and jam it into the soil. Voila! Your plants will receive a steady soak from the bottle while you’re gone. Just don’t vacation too long, or your plants might chug all the bottles dry!

Regrow Lettuce, Celery, Bok Choy & Cabbage from Cut-Offs

regrow-bok-choy

If you’re frugal like we are and you like growing your own veggies, this is a hack for you. When cooking with lettuce, celery, bok choy or cabbage, try cutting the leaves off to around one inch above the root and then place the root in a bowl of water. You’ll get to eat the fresh leaves and you’ll have a great shot at regrowing more of them from the stump.

Use Shower Curtain Hooks to Organize Jeans for Easy Accessibility

organize-jeans

Organizing jeans in your closet can be a pain. Sure you can fold jeans and stack them on a shelf somewhere, but then grabbing a pair on the bottom turns the whole stack into a mess. Plus, it’s hard to differentiate one pair from another when they’re all in a stack. Instead, grab some inexpensive shower curtain hooks and hang the jeans from their side belt loops. This hack delivers much better visibility and instant access to your favorite duds!

How to Hide TV Wires Over a Fireplace

how-to-hide-tv-cords

Obscuring wiring on a regular wall is hard enough, however, how to hide TV wires over a fireplace (particularly brick) can be a big challenge. Our friend Julie Blanner has a great project that uses a simple target shelf (or you can create your own using crown moulding), to hide those ugly wires and cables leading to and from your TV. This technique even works over a brick or stone fireplace. It’s all in the mantel.
